1) 字面上的比較
  * X is like Y / X is unlike Y
  * X does Y, as Z dose etc.
2)數(shù)量上的比較
  * Greater than, less than, etc
  * More ___ than, as ___ as, etc
  * Half as much as, 30% of, etc
3) 其他情況 
  * I mistook X for Y
    I mistook that table for ___  
  for the sentence to make any sense, this has to be chair, tools, etc.--- in other words, something of the SAME GENERAL TYPE as a table.
  * The company replaced X with Y

1)所比較的對(duì)象在語(yǔ)法上保持形式一致
GRAMMATICAL parallelism – the comparable elements should play the same grammatical role (i.e., they should be written in GRAMMATICAL FORMS that are as similar as possible).

2)所比較的對(duì)象在邏輯上是同一類
LOGICALLY parallelism – the thing have to BE LIKE EACH OTHER.
？Same priority
？Same TYPE/CLASS OF THING
？Same SITUATION/CONTEXT
A duck’s feet are bigger than a chicken’s.
A duck’s feet are bigger than a chicken. (this sentence implies that the duck’s feet are bigger than a whole chicken)

EXAMPLES:
I like swimming more than to run. The grammar is bad, the meaning/logic is fine.
Chopin’s concertos are more emotional than Mozart. The grammar is fine (N vs. N), the logic is bad. (you can’t compare a piece of music to a person)

When you deal with COMPARISONS, MOST errors will be of MEANING/LOGIC. Fewer of the errors will be grammatical errors.

A.the last day scheduled to collect, workers at the automobile company are eligible for its severance package 
B.the last day they are scheduled to collect, workers are eligible for the automobile company's severance package

E.the last day that they are scheduled to collect, the automobile company's severance package is available to workers 

In E: “the last day that they are scheduled to collect” implies that people are collecting days.
   The last song that I am scheduled to sing.

When you put ‘s on something, it acts as an ADJECTIVE.

LIKE A, B.
A: This should be a NOUN, perhaps with modifiers, but NOT a clause! In other words, it should NOT be S + V.
B: This should be a WHOLE SENTENC (independent clause) that STARTS WITH the comparable NOUN.
Like my brother, I have difficulty waking up early. Correct
Like I told you yesterday, I’m not coming to the party. Incorrect
Like swimming, running burns many calories. Correct
Like my brother, setting up in the morning has always been hard for me. Incorrect

 * Things that are same (hence the comparison)
 * Things that are different (hence the *need* for a comparison)
Like my brother, I have a nerdy sense of humor.
  The sense of humor is the SAME, the people are NOT the same.
Just as you must learn scales before you can learn advanced pieces of music, you must learn to sew basic stiches before you can create well-fitted clothing.
  The overall nature of the act is the SAME (in both cases, there’s some basic thing that you need to know before you can move on to advanced things)
  The specific acts are NOT the same (one is about music, and the other is about sewing)

In comparisons, “AS” should be followed by a CLAUSE (S+V) or by a PREP PHRASE.
The weather is hot and dry in Nevada, as it is in Arizona.
As in Arizona, the weather is hot and dry in Nevada.

“as it is with” “as with the case of” “as is the case” are fine.
A: “it” doesn’t stand anything at all.
B: “with the case”: nothing is with the case
As in Arizona, the weather is hot and dry in Nevada. This sentence refers to something that is literally “in” Arizona.
